SAFE - Streaming approaches for Europe Enhancing the digital competences by streaming approaches for schools to tackle the challenges of COVID-19

Overview

COVID-19 is affecting daily work in all schools. In the current situation, which is strongly characterized by the effects of contact restrictions due to the corona pandemic, it is becoming clear that schools at all levels, i.e. primary, secondary and upper secondary education, are faced with the challenge of teaching in online formats. The Erasmus+ project SAFE addresses this new and innovative way of learning and teaching in the age of digitalization and COVID-19. It is part of the school education program area of ERASMUS+. The partnership raises awareness of the need for a didactic approach to eLearning.

The SAFE approach focuses on the use of streaming in school education. The project is working on a basic concept for integrating e-learning into daily teaching. In this basic concept, teachers use tablets or laptops on which, for example, Blackboard applications such as LiveBoard, Doceri or Explain Everything are streamed, whereby the information on these devices and the teacher's speech are streamed directly to the learners. This allows teachers to implement familiar teaching methods, such as writing on the board or on an overhead projector, in a similar way, and to provide and didactically embed explanations and clarifications. Participation can optionally take place online via a live stream or by creating a recording that is later available on a server (as a storage location) via a video or film for learners to view at any time.

The SAFE streaming concept is being created based on the DISK online model. DISK online stands for Didactic Interactive Streaming Concept Online (DISK Didactic Interactive Streaming Concept Online). This approach was developed to address the challenges of COVID-19 and the technological challenges facing schools and education. The DISK-Online model by Beutner/Pechuel was presented at the Ministry of Education (NRW) in October 2020 and at the German Bundestag (Enquete Commission for Digitization) in November 2020. The DISK online approach was developed and tested in 2020 under the restrictions of COVID-19 and was successful. It was also presented at the SITE Interactive Conference USA and the Innovate Learning Conference USA in 2020. The feedback was excellent and the first implementations in schools yielded excellent results and support from teachers and students.

The DISK online approach is aligned in its basic conception with four scenarios with an increasing degree of interaction. Interaction is described in the DISK approach from DISK1 (low teacher-centered interaction) to DISK4 (learner-centered interaction) and can be used in different schools to adapt teaching to technical limitations and digital skills. Teachers need an approach that can be applied in the classroom to learners who

(a) are not all present in the classroom or to learners who

(b) are only partially present in the classroom or who are geared towards teachers who

(c) want to add eLearning elements to their teaching method portfolio now and in the future.

The SAFE project is using Streamlabs OBS and the streaming platform Twitch to create an approach that teachers can use to overcome the challenges of COVID-19 and integrate eLearning. And it does so in a sustainable and transferable way in school education and teaching. Teachers are trained in how to use Streamlabs OBS and the streaming platform as part of the SAFE project. In addition, multipliers are also trained. This is one way of dealing with e-learning in which learners only need a browser and no specific technical or e-learning knowledge, and teachers implement a fairly simple approach to deal with new requirements.

Objective

SAFE aims to create a streaming concept, provide an implementation in different schools, write a handbook for teachers and a 'SAFE-Streaming in School Education' book, and provide an evaluation of the implementation. In addition, SAFE is presenting a strategy paper and a lay report (easy-to-understand explanations and wording for everyone) to make recommendations for further school education. The book 'SAFE-Streaming in School Education' is being written in English and contains information about the project, the implementation, a checklist and tips for teachers, survey and evaluation results, and insights into the innovative SAFE concept.

Part of SAFE will also be an acceptance study in the partner countries to provide a European overview of acceptances, experiences, problems and opportunities in the areas of eLearning and streaming in school education. The main target groups are teachers, learners and educators.
